What's the Best Thing You Can Get From Your NYC Wedding Photographer in 2026? Variety.

If there’s one thing couples are prioritizing in 2026, it’s variety.

Not just variety in how they experience their wedding (less production-oriented and more authenticity-focused) — but variety in mediums, artistic approaches, and storytelling styles.

Couples don’t just want a wedding documented anymore. They want an experience that feels creative, layered, and uniquely theirs. And honestly, this shift has been happening for a while.

When I first started photographing weddings over a decade ago, the industry looked very different. Weddings were photographed in a very timeless, traditional way. The goal was consistency. Clean compositions. Classic portraits. Beautiful, but often predictable.

Today, couples are asking for something more artistic, more emotional, and more dynamic. Some desire an entirely candid approach and some want a mix of both candid and posed.

Couples who work with me love that candid and cinematic look (which means we ebb and flow between candid photography and posed photography throughout their wedding day). Couples want something that feels like art — not just documentation.

That’s why in 2026, one of the best things you can look for in a wedding photographer is variety.

Why Couples Want Variety in 2026

I'm in a handful of group chats with other New York City wedding photographers, and this topic came up recently. Everyone was giving their two cents on this specific question: Why are couples wanting a photographer who can use a variety of mediums and approaches?

Firstly, variety combines the best of both worlds for GenZ couples with Xillennial parents and boomer grandparents. For grandparents who expect a more traditional wedding photograph of them smiling at the camera with their grandchild. For Xillennial Parents who want special moments documented throughout the day. And for GenZ, who don't care as much about the perfectness of the photos, but care more about the art and trendiness of the photos. What if a photographer could ensure they are photographing sweet relational moments while also delivering on hard flash and trendy blurs?

Modern couples consume media differently. They grew up with an interest in film photography, iphone photography, short-form video, and social media storytelling all happening at the same time.

Naturally, they want their wedding memories to reflect that same richness.

Instead of receiving one cohesive aesthetic, couples are excited by:

  • Digital photography

  • Film photography

  • Candid video clips

  • Super 8 film

  • Editorial-style portraits

  • Documentary moments

It’s not about everything matching perfectly anymore. It’s about capturing the full feeling of the day. I've had SO many wedding consultations this year where these words are stated over and over again: I want our photos to feel like our day felt.

And that’s exactly how I’ve evolved my own approach, although I've always had a value to make you feel seen and celebrated when taking your photos. And that core of how I approach weddings will never go away.

From Traditional Weddings to Art-Forward Storytelling

When I started in this industry, I photographed weddings with a very traditional and timeless approach. I focused on consistency, clean portraits, and classic storytelling.

But over the years, my work naturally evolved into something more art-forward, with each new medium expanding how I approach my work. Each medium brings something different to the story.

Digital photography captures clarity and emotion. Film adds softness and nostalgia. Video captures movement and in-between moments. Super 8 introduces a vintage, cinematic feel that feels incredibly special.

Together, these mediums create a layered story of your wedding day.

Why Super 8 Film Is So Popular Right Now

Vintage aesthetics are having a huge moment right now, and Super 8 film has become one of the most exciting ways to capture that feeling.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve added a Super 8 assistant to my branding, lifestyle, couples, and wedding packages. Having two creatives working together allows for multiple artistic perspectives and mediums happening at once.

It’s not just about documenting the day — it’s about creating something that feels cinematic and nostalgic at the same time.

I get why couples love it and if I could go back and add a Super8 to my wedding package, I would do it in a heart beat. It's so fun.

Short Films Are Becoming a New Favorite

Another thing I introduced in 2025 was creating short films during sessions and in-between moments at weddings.

These aren’t full videography packages. Instead, they’re small, intentional clips that capture the feeling of the day. You may have seen little films like these on Instagram labeled as "Postcards".

The result is something incredibly special — a short, cinematic glimpse into what your wedding felt like.

And it’s been one of the most popular additions for couples in 2025 and 2026.

The product is cool. The combination of taking photos and video is creatively fulfilling for me. And it gives couples something different — something that feels alive.

The Future of Wedding Photography Is Layered

In 2026, couples don’t want just one perspective.

They want a layered story:

  • Still images, less posed

  • Authenticity

  • Vintage aesthetics

  • A handful of Editorial feeling portraits

  • Documentary moments

This variety creates a more complete memory of the day.

Because weddings aren’t just one feeling. They’re emotional, chaotic, beautiful, quiet, and joyful — sometimes all within the same hour.

And the best way to capture that is through multiple artistic approaches.

What to Look for in a Wedding Photographer in 2026

If you’re getting married in 2026, consider looking for a photographer who offers:

  • Multiple mediums (Photo, film, video)

  • An art-forward approach

  • A mix of candid and directed moments

  • Someone who encourages couples portraits whether they're candid or posed

  • Creative storytelling

Because in 2026, the most valuable thing you can get from your wedding photographer isn’t just beautiful photos.

It’s variety — and a layered story that truly captures what your wedding felt like.
