why you should still think about "Posing" before your candid photo session

why you should still think about "Posing" before your candid photo session

Keep scrolling down for my full 2026 posing guide.

As a photographer who combines both candid and editorial approaches to sessions, I really like to remind anyone, whether they're a couple, family, or individual that it's still worth mentally and physically preparing for a photo session, whether it's candid or not. Here's my argument for why you should still think about "posing" before your candid photo session:

It's shocking (but also not shocking?) how many of my couples show up to photo sessions stiff, tense, thinking about the argument they had on the subway ride over, etc. Their mind and body are not quite prepared. And for couples, I especially encourage you to really prepare your mind and body to admire and care for your partner during this time. This photoshoot exists for the sake of fun and celebrating your love-- it's a moment for you two to show gratitude and care for one another through words, looks, and actions. And then I, as the photographer and artist, elevate those looks and direct you/give you feedback to make those moments magically visual. It's truly a collaboration, which is why I ask you to prepare ahead of time.

That's right, I'm a photographer who gives homework. It's not just about picking out what you're wearing or picking a photographer you like, it's about choosing peace, relaxing your body, and visualizing how you want to love on your partner.

Does this mean I won't direct you or help you pose if you feel stuck? Heck no, I've got you. Communicating what you need during our session is encouraged. Checking in with you during our session is essential.

I literally would never be upset if one of my clients leaned so deeply into caring for their partner during a session they asked me to give them space so they can share words of gratitude with their partner-- in fact, I oftentimes ask partners to do just that. Share gratitude for one another. And I give you space to have a meaningful moment. This is what makes candid photography inspiring and sweet... and personalized to you.

My prompt guide (keep scrolling to see the entire guide) encourages you to be willing to try the direction given by the photographer. It encourages open-mindedness when prompts might make you feel silly in public. It encourages you to set down your phones and apple watches (I can't tell you how distracting these are and how easily they take you out of the moment) to focus on your partner.

I provide my posing guide for the people who need a little practice being present in their bodies with one another. I especially encourage holding one another in the mirror and telling one another what you like about how you're holding one another. Giving one another feedback during a photo session is totally cool, but remember it's also important to just have fun during our photo session and not critique our partner too much-- If I think something looks extra weird, I'll give you both feedback.

Have you ever experienced a photo session that creates such intentional moments? I honestly hope I set the bar for other photographers to reach for real moments that allow really sweet connection.

Enjoy my posing guide below!

XOXO,

Stacie
