East Village Chill maternity photography with Cinematic maternity photographer in New York City

Romantic candid maternity photos in New York City with a couple walking through the East Village at sunset, photographed by a cinematic maternity photographer.

As a Cinematic maternity photographer in New York City, I'm always a fan of my subjects intentionally doing things they actually love doing during their photo sessions. Real joy yields real photo joy. Whether we're shooting super posed or candid (this session was super candid), doing an activity that brings joy translates so well in the final product. For Caroline and Ross, their joy came from walking their favorite date night neighborhood, the East Village and Tompkins Square Park. One of their last strolls before they became three.

Caroline and Ross wanted their photos to feel romantic, candid and relaxed. And as always, I'm working to make them feel cinematic, like something out of a movie that really tells a story. I think, with the help of the NYC sunset, we nailed that vision. Sunsets are as romantic as it gets if you ask me. And, yes, you won't see a ton of "clucthing" or "cupping" the bump in my photos. While that's a very real and sacred part of pregnancy, it's not something I tell my couples to do. Sometimes just walking with your bump is what you're used to, we don't need you to hold onto it for every photo.

If you've never been to the East Village, this little walk we did is a great way to experience the city: Starting at Abe Lebewohl Park and Abe Lebewohl Triangle (one of my favorite little corners of the city), walking to Tompkins Square, then ending at HighLife to appease Caroline's pregnancy hot dog craving. The second they started looking for a place to get hot dogs, I thought--- more maternity sessions should involve a pregnancy craving. That's such a real way to document the season.

If you want to end your photo session and transform it into a romantic date (I mean, you're already all dressed up aren't you?), I highly recommend going to Hani's (amazing cinnamon rolls and baked goods all around; make a reservation or arrive early so you don't have to stand in a line). Also, the vibes are so so cool.

What do you think your romantic NYC maternity photo session would look like?

I'd love to start offering a romantic city sessions and then, if couples are up for it, adding a more intimate hotel or at home maternity boudoir session onto that, for both mom and dad or just mom. I think there's something really fun about getting two different vibes from a photo session, but I think there's also something insanely intimate about getting to celebrate a baby bump and the intimacy surrounding a pregnancy. In 2026, that's the kind of art I'd like to deliver more of-- art that continues to engage true intimacy and document real love.
